A Cake Walk

Cake Walk through the years

In our last blog post regarding cake trends, we saw the "Cake Quintet" make a reappearance after nearly 10 years.  As in fashion, it seems the styles always come back (and some we might wish they did not).  Here are a few of our favorite from days gone by, paired up to new trends...a "cake walk down the aisle of history" so to speak.  Let us know what you think, or share your favorite vintage edition cake!

Then...

50th Anniversary Cake Reproduction
This cake was reproduced in 2002 from it's original grandeur in 1952.  It features basket weave icing and a ton of fresh flowers and love birds topper.

Now...

Vintage Cake Reproduction
This cake was created for Southern Bride & Groom photo shoot in 2016 (photo by F8 Studios), with a Great Gatsby inspiration, though in times of Gatsby it is doubtful a cake would have looked precisely like this one.  Antique blush fondant, bling embellishment and ostrich feather add charm and elegance.

Then...

White on White Texture
Here is a very traditional cake that dates back to 2000.  All in buttercream, the decor detail is pretty vivid without using fondant.  Simple cake topper of romantic flowers

Now...

Plaster Look
A very simple buttercream treatment from 2016, with a few more pops of flowers.  This design originated a few years ago, but seems very popular still today.

Then...

Monogram (2000)

Now...

Implied Monogram (2016)

Then...

Retro Display (2000)
While this cake display was prepared at the turn of the century, it screams 1970's to us.  We still don't exactly understand what it is, the Groom was an architect, and this arrangement was significant to his work.  It was a tasty combination of mousse filled cakes with berries and chocolate modeling paste.  While eccentric, it met with rave reviews!

Now...

Mini Dessert display (2016)
A variety of delicious tarts and mini cupcakes to augment a traditional cake topper.

Then...

Buttercream Roses (1990)
Oi! Pink buttercream roses with most elegant (not) plastic column blocking.  This one needs to stay in the closet

Now...

Pink Ombre (2014)
Rose petals seem to be better in a fresh state and this ombre cake is all the rage!  This beautiful buttercream creation was featured in the Knot Magazine, in their real weddings feature

Then...

Chocolate Garden (2012)
This was a stunning cake for a stunning couple! It was displayed under a grape vine arbor decorated with additional butterflies, flowers and twinkle lights.  Hand made fondant flowers were finished with gold luster dust.  Metallics making their way onto the cake scene...

Now...

Hollywood Star (2016)
There isn't a huge demand for chocolate wedding cakes, though we believe they are quite decadent and stylish.  Here's a fun Hollywood theme cake featuring chocolate fondant and gold embellishments
