We're Movin' On Up!
Posted to: General News by Lorin Laxton on Aug 17, 2012On the morning of August 2, 2012, I woke up sad. I thought about August of 1992, and moving into 905 Tryon Street. I made drapes for the "new building" on Tryon Street (later renamed Tryon Hill Drive to avoid confusion with Tryon Road in Cary - boy, did that ever make me mad having to reprint all our stationary!) The excitement of relocating from Deveraux Street to Tryon Hill was but one of the very fond memories we created there. On this melancholy morning, I reminisced about how our children and families played significant roles in the development of our business, those others that have been with us during the ups and downs the highs and lows the big sales, the times we cringed to make payrolls, and other characters along the way. All the chapters which have written in this wonderfully charming and historic building on Tryon Hill Drive, nestled between Raleigh landmarks; Goodnight's Comedy Club, the Irregardless Cafe, and yes, in the backyard of Central Prison, will always be with me. Earlier this year, we were made aware that the Morgan Street development project would "absorb" our home of the last 20 years (and wow, has that time flown), to make way for something new. Jill and I agreed that at least one of us would have to devote nearly 100% of their time to manage this project, and I was appointed the lucky one.
In this blog, I will attempt to chronicle the events of our move, from selecting the site, to moving in and all the craziness in between. I might even share a few memories of days gone by at Tryon Hill! So, while I woke up sad on August the 2nd, I went to bed happy! I thought about making new drapes, picking new colors, expanding our kitchen, the hundreds of requests for different things our employees want to see at the new facility and excited to begin writing the next chapter of the Catering Works story. Stay tuned for more details...
